Half the world is in complete and utter chaos and the other half of the world is sitting around staring vacantly into space, oblivious to what's going on. I don't blame them either - there's been close to no exposure of the massacre happening in Libya on the Australian news until twelve hours ago. I hadn't heard a peep on the radios and the news reports hadn't even acknowledged a situation in Libya or Bahrain.

The front page has been the earthquake in New Zealand for days now. The situation in New Zealand is awful; the number of deaths is close to 100 now, the casualties and damage is painfully incomprehensible.
But the earthquake is a natural disaster and, in-terms of ongoing damage, over. The situation in Libya and Bahrain isn't close to over - it hasn't even begun to end, innocent women are still being raped, unarmed protestors are still being brutally murdered, mass amounts of civilians are being gunned down, any military officer who refuses to take the lives of its people are still being tortured and killed.

I spent all of yesterday morning trying to find a single article on the front page of Sydney Morning Herald and came up empty handed. Thank goodness for
twitter,
tumblr and
the bbc for their endless sources of new information. Twitter and tumblr have been fantastic for spreading awareness. Retweeting and reblogging might seem like small acts, but you'll be surprised at how succesful social networking is at spreading information. While tumblr was days ahead of the issue, twitter didn't take long to catch up - #
Libya and #
Gadaffi are both trending topics.
This morning, I was so relieved to see the Australian media has finally begun catching on. There are articles popping up on local news websites and I heard them talking about Gadaffi and his crimes on the radio on the way to work.

With 400
dead on the first day, 900 on the second and over
2,000 on the third, this has long stopped being a war - this is
mass murder. Gadaffi, having declared war on his own people, has passed the point of madness. Soon there will be no more country left to oppress.
It seems like the only news pouring in is bad, but there is hope. Gadaffi is still in power but one by one, his men are defecting; politicians are stepping down, military personnel are fighting back - joining their fellow people in fighting for freedom.

These people are willing to die for their country's freedom. The least we can do is spread awareness and give Libya and Bahrain our support. Sign petitions. Tell everybody you know. Stand together and join the fight for freedom and peace.
Take thirty seconds out of your time to stop whatever you're doing on the internet and sign
this online petition. It only takes a moment and every signature makes a difference.
